The Principles of Memorization

Reciting the Shurangama Mantra at an extremely fast speed makes memorization essentially effortless. Why is this? Because recitation is a function of consciousness, while memorization is a function of the manas (the mental faculty). When consciousness becomes highly proficient in recitation, the manas is gradually imbued accordingly. At this point, if the mantra can be recited at a very rapid pace, not only is consciousness free from distracting thoughts and delusions, but the manas is also free from them, allowing for the exclusive cultivation of the mantra. Naturally, the mantra becomes memorized, enabling consciousness to recite it fluently without the need for deliberate memorization practice.

This single-minded focus is samadhi (meditative absorption). By eliminating scattered thoughts and concentrating all mental energy on one thing without interference, that thing can be accomplished. Therefore, with samadhi, all things can be achieved, and wisdom will naturally arise. The union of manas and samadhi can accomplish all things; the realization of all dharmas is inseparable from manas and samadhi. Thus, samadhi primarily refers to the stability of the manas as the commander, while the six consciousnesses, like attendants, must follow the commander's lead, advancing and retreating, stabilizing and ceasing together. When encountering a problem, if the manas can deeply and exclusively contemplate it, disregarding all other dharmic conditions and states, concentration rapidly intensifies, potentially reaching the root of the problem, causing wisdom to surge forth.

Speed can induce samadhi, and slowness can also induce samadhi. Reciting the mantra slowly, even to the point of extreme slowness, can also lead to profound single-mindedness. Consciousness is free from wandering thoughts, the manas is free from wandering thoughts, and it can wholeheartedly receive the influence of consciousness. The mantra gradually enters the heart of the manas, becoming memorized within, and can subsequently be recited from memory. Both extremely fast recitation of mantras and sutras, and extremely slow recitation, have their respective advantages and disadvantages. Speed may lead to distraction, while slowness may lead to dullness, requiring constant adjustment. The two methods are applied in different contexts; the appropriate method must be chosen for the specific situation. Each individual needs to personally experience and flexibly master these methods to achieve the best results.
