What Information from Past Lives Can Manas Convey?

For instance, when Master Hanshan encountered the relics of Su Dongpo, he felt an extraordinary sense of familiarity and closeness. This was information conveyed by the manas (mind root), which the mano-vijnana (consciousness) discerned and responded to with a feeling of intimacy. This discernment was somewhat vague and indefinite, yet the sensation was profound—a feeling imparted by the manas to the consciousness. If the consciousness possessed the wisdom to further recognize the inclinations of the manas, it could acquire more detailed and accurate information, going beyond mere feelings of familiarity and closeness. In such a case, the manas might satisfy its own inclinations, leading to further thoughts and actions.

For example, if Person B constantly speaks ill of Person A behind their back, Person A’s consciousness may be unaware, but their manas perceives it. Then, when Person A meets Person B, the manas will inevitably convey this information, causing the consciousness to inexplicably feel uncomfortable and develop a dislike for Person B. Yet, the consciousness cannot pinpoint the exact reason for this aversion, while the manas understands but cannot articulate it. If the consciousness were wise, it would understand why—that Person B has been speaking ill of them—and might even plan some form of retaliation. Once the manas also agrees to retaliate, then there will be a story to tell between Persons A and B. Therefore, one should not gossip about or judge others behind their backs, much less plot against them in secret. For no secret can remain hidden forever—no wall is impenetrable. Forming negative karmic ties with others will inevitably lead to retribution sooner or later. No one is beyond the law of cause and effect; no action is without its consequences.

The manas can also transmit all afflictions such as greed, hatred, and delusion to the consciousness. For instance, when greed arises toward material possessions, upon seeing them, one may desire to claim them as their own. The consciousness may feel too embarrassed or hesitant to act, but with the manas instigating and taking charge behind the scenes, the consciousness will cautiously, stealthily, and covertly devise ways to appropriate the possessions. Conversely, if the manas is upright, it can transmit righteous thoughts to the consciousness. If the manas is resolute, it can make the consciousness steadfast. If the manas is wise, it can guide the consciousness to act in accordance with reason and Dharma, enabling it to encounter defiled states yet remain untainted.
